VI.

Talking a few more times with the esaul about tomorrow’s attack, which now, looking at the close French, Denisov, it seemed, finally decided, he turned his horse and went backwards.

— Well, brother, now ride and dry off, — he said to Petya.

Driving to the forest guardhouse, Denisov stopped, peering in the forest. By the wood, between the woods in large light steps was walking on long legs, with long dangling hands a person in a jacket, bast shoes and Kazan hat with a gun across his shoulder and ax behind his belt. Seeing Denisov, this person hastily tossed something in the bush and, removing from the hanging fields a wet hat, came up to the chief. This was Tihon. His dug smallpox and wrinkled face with small narrow eyes shone with arrogant fun. He highly raised his head and, as if holding on from laughter, stared at Denisov.

— Well, where did you disappear? — said Denisov.

— Where did I disappear to? I went behind the French, — boldly and hastily was the response of Tihon, hoarse, but with a melodious bass.

— What for again did you climb in the afternoon? Cattle! Well what did you not take?..

— Took that and that, — said Tihon.

— Where is it?

— Yes I took it first still at the first of dawn, — continued Tihon, rearranging his wide flat turned feet in his bast shoes — yes and brought together in the forest. I saw not okay, thought to give losing, another carefulness which I will take.

— See the rogue, so it is, — said Denisov to the esaul. — What for again did you not bring it?

— Yes what to lead him, — angrily and hastily interrupted Tihon, — not grief-stricken. Don't I know what your kind needs?

— What a beast!.. Well?..

— I went for another, — continued Tihon, — I crawled in such a manner in the forest, yes and lied down. — Tihon suddenly and flexibly lied down on his belly, presenting his face as he did this. — One whips up, — he continued. — I in such a manner raked. — Tihon fast and easily jumped up. — I go to speak to the colonel. Such a lot of noise. But there are four here. They threw on me with skewers. I ax at them in such a manner: what are you, they say, Christ with you, — cried out Tihon, waving his hands and menacingly frowning, exposing his chest.

— That we from the mountains saw as you stretched the assigned, through those puddles, — said the esaul narrowing his brilliant eyes.

Petya very much wanted to laugh, but he saw that all held on from laughter. He fastly transferred his eyes from the face of Tihon to the face of the esaul and Denisov, not understanding what all this meant.

— You fool those not present, — said Denisov angrily coughing. — What for did you not bring the first one?

Tihon began to scratch one hand on his back, another his head, and suddenly all of his mug stretched out in a shining stupid smile, which opened his lack of tooth (for what he was nicknamed Shcherbaty (chipped)). Denisov smiled and Petya flooded with a fun laugh, to which joined Tihon himself.

— Yes that is really unjust, — said Tihon. — His clothes on him were bad, where again to lead him. Yes and rough, your nobleness. How again, do they say, I myself am Anaral’s son, I will not go, they say.

— What a cattle! — said Denisov. — I need to question...

— Yes I asked him, — said Tihon. — He spoke: bad and knowingly. Of ours, he said much, and all bad; he only spoke of titles. He gasped, spoke, very well, all taken away, — concluded Tihon, funny and resolutely looking at the eye of Denisov.

— Here I pour those a hundred hot, you will be a fool that writhes, — said Denisov strictly.

— Yes what again to be angry at that, — said Tihon, — what have I not seen your French? Here gives the dark, I to you what kind you like, though I will bring three.

— Well, ride, — said Denisov. And to the very guards he rode angrily frowning and silent.

Tihon was called for back and Petya heard how laughed with him and above him the Cossacks about what were the kind of boots that he threw in the bush.

When passed the laugh, they controlled the words and smile of Tihon, and Petya got in that instant that Tihon killed this man, making it awkward. He turned back to the captive drummer and something pricked in his heart. Yet this awkwardness went on only one instant. He felt miserably taller raising his head, cheering up to question the esaul with a significant look about tomorrow’s enterprise so that to not be unworthy of this society in which he was found out.

The sent officer met Denisov on the road with news that Dolohov himself now comes, and that with his parties all was safe.

Denisov suddenly cheered up and called upon to himself Petya.

— Well tell me about yourself, — he said.

Pevear and Volokhonsky Notes: Tikhon the scout comes back and explains what happened and why he didn't bring in a scout. Tikhon teases out the information in a humorous conversation with Denisov. However, since the humor revolves around Tikhon killing people, Petya becomes uneasy and tries to appear worthy of the people around him when Denisov wants to talk to him.
